The Afro-Canadian Contractors Association (ACCA), in partnership with the prestigious George Brown College, has developed a new course on entrepreneurship in construction.

Here’s what you’ll learn…

Business Idea Development

Using established research processes, learners develop and refine a construction industry business idea, including how to position the business for success.

Identify an entrepreneurial product or service (within the construction industry).

R

Develop and refine the business idea for an existing product or service in the construction industry.

R

Outline short-term and longer-term goals for the construction business.

R

Analyze consumer data in the construction industry to refine the product/service idea and to inform the product differentiation strategy and the creation of a business plan.

R

Define/Refine the target audience of the business.

Business Plan

Learners develop an evidence-informed business plan, outlining key resources, work plans, and success measures.

Create/Refine a business plan based on research and required resources (Financial, Physical, Intellectual, Human, and Digital).

R

Outline realistic work plans that include branding, communication, marketing, sales and customer service strategies, operations, and key success indicators.

Highlight ways the business plan promotes sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Financial Planning

Learners conduct a detailed analysis of the costs involved in launching and operating a new business.

Conduct a two-year financial forecast.

R

Calculate expenses and potential income.

R

Analyze the impact of supply chain management and operations management on the financial health of the (construction) business.

Present the financial plan using industry-standard business communication tools.

Learners develop a clear introduction to a business or service and estimate labour, materials and overhead accurately for a construction project.

Outline the purpose and importance of a business pitch.

Identify the key elements and characteristics of successful business pitches and bids.

Develop a clear introduction to a business/service to engage new clients and maintain existing clients.
